I called to my blog readers attention the brilliant way that Safeway and similar stores were packaging the ripe, almost overripe, fruits, vegetables and unsold roast chicken for sale the next day.
Now I want to call your attention to another brilliant trend. Safeway and the other similar retailers are creating a large array of ‘side dishes’. Dishes such as macaroni and cheese, spinach au gratin and various forms of mashed potatoes.
I’m the cook, more accurately the ‘meal preparer’ in the family. After twenty three years of doing this I have always been at a loss about what to serve with the main course. I look at all the vegetables at the grocery store and I see ‘work’. Vegetables usually require work to create a second dish. Maybe not potatoes.
Now I am happy to let the grocery prepare my second dish while I spend time grilling the main course. The whole area of ‘second dishes’ is exploding in refrigerated and frozen categories.
Thank you modern commerce.
