There has been a news item recently about the National Guard paying large ‘re-up’ bonuses a decade ago when getting new soldiers was hard to do. The bonuses were often $15,000 an amount more than allowed by the government.
Apparently thousands of soldiers got the bonus. Now the government wants its money back from the soldiers who served.
My friend Bob went to work for the IRS when he was just out of law school in Los Angeles in the mid 1960’s.
Bob was much smarter and more competent than any of the other IRS hires at the time. His first assignment was to retrieve $500 in overpayment that the Navy had made by mistake to several thousand sailors. The sailors had been dunned for a decade and few had returned the money.
Bob, without authorization, sent the sailors a letter on IRS stationary, saying the IRS was dropping the matter and signed it personally, wishing the sailors ‘well’.
Bob lasted one year on that job.
And you know people who vote for more government, like voting for Hillary and Bernie?
