Of course I am surrounded by self righteous Lefties in San Francisco who hate big businesses, love organic, expect armageddon and celebrate their own divine goodness.
What I love to do is find something that creates a little turmoil in their smugness. It’s fun.
The most recent is my discovery that Safeway, the chain that all my Leftie friends hate, has the most delicious fresh corn in the Bay Area and likewise the sweetest most extraordinary grapes I have ever had.
What my Lefty friends could never understand is why Safeway could have these two incredible fresh foods. The reason is that an agricultural crop is expensive to plant, grow and harvest. Traditionally farmers get loans to cover the crop and repay the loan when the crop is sold. The bigger the crop the bigger the loan and the greater the risk.
When an entire large crop can be sold in advance to a single buyer, the farmer welcomes the chance to get out of a risky weather dependent business.
Safeway is able to buy two crops. The entire crop of corn from Brentwood California in Contra Costa that supplies the entire West Coast with the freshest most delicious corn anyone has ever tasted. Safeway gets the best of it with its significant capital.
And Pretty Lady seedless grapes from the Dulchich farm. 2,800 acres in the Calif. central valley.
Again Safeway, a giant single buyer gets the best of the crop.
Eat your hearts out you religious Lefties. We get the best fresh corn and seedless grapes in the world.
