There is a long term significant change in our society. The Lefty ideology is on the wane.
The design of our Constitution and its underlying concepts were explicated in the Federalist Papers. Both Madison and Hamilton, the main authors, were explicit in stating their view that human beings are not perfectible by the actions of government. Human beings are born with many sins and shortcomings and the best government cannot change this. Government is most effective when it resists the entreaties and foibles of human miscarriage.
The Constitution and the Federalists were intent on keeping the errors and sinful ways of humans from harming each other via a centralized powerful government.
This very conception of the imperfect human is a core American idea. It has been challenged many times over the past two centuries. Hundreds of American utopian societies have been created to experiment with human perfectibility. The entire French Revolution and Marxism in Russia and China have been designed to improve humankind. They have all failed.
It is has been commerce that fits the American model of a human being. Commerce accepts humans the way they are and allows them to become whatever they are best suited to.
The Left has believed in changing people. Interestingly that is why it is supported by three main American voting constituencies.
* Single women are disproportionately supporters of the Left. They, unlike married women, believe in the perfectibility of man on a very personal basis. Single woman commonly think they can find a man and mold him into a model they want.
* Mainstream religions (Methodist, Anglican, Presbyterian.) believe in the perfectibility of man and that is why they have taken such extreme Lefty positions as: anti-war activism and poverty amelioration by government money. These ideas don't work and the mainstream religions have lost half their American members since the 1960s. These former members have joined evangelical churches. Evangelicals accept people the way they are and do not try to change them.
* Lastly, the Left is supported by unions. Unions of course have been in decline for half a century too. A basic union premise is that individual humans have no important contribution to make. Only seniority and union group efforts can improve man's station in life.
Of course Americans don't agree with the union model of humans. Americans have left unions behind to the dustbin of history and the fantasy world of government employment.
Summary: the Left believes in a failed model of human beings; the model assumes that humans can be perfected by ideology and state compulsion. It can't, based on 200 years of evidence. Only commerce allows people to perfect themselves.
