It is rather stunning to me that we live in a society in which a whole range of foods are illegal for us to buy. Illegal for businesses to sell to us.
Simply looking at the list is rather stunning.
Americans are not allowed to buy or eat horse meat. I personally love horsemeat and have eaten it raw in Japan and in Seattle when I was young.
We are not allowed to buy any cetacean meat: that includes whales, dolphins and porpoises. I have had good whale meat in Tokyo and some not-so good whale meat at a tourist trap. Whale is not a fish but I recently had it served in a rotating sushi bar in Tokyo.
The list is actually much longer. There is a wide range of fresh water and sea creatures that are illegal to catch because they are too small and consequently illegal to sell in the U.S. Some of these species never grow to the legal minimum size of 6 inches. There seems to be no actual problem with abalone that do not grow to that size or the 10,000 species that the Japanese eat that are smaller than 6 inches in length. I have eaten at least a dozen delicious sea creatures that are much smaller(excluding sardines).
Today's list has not really begun. In California illegal foods include goose liver pâté, chickens and eggs from chickens that grew up in a small cage and shark fin soup made from real shark fans. I have had shark meat in Tokyo that was probably the best fish I have ever eaten.
Ortolan, a French songbird is illegal to catch and sell.
As my readers can guess there are many other foods that are illegal for us to buy or sell. This list is just a start.
Is there something seriously wrong with democracy when a bunch of idiotic self serving fanatics can vote to decide what foods we shall eat? I think there is.
