I found this traditional telephone booth in an obscure location in a parking garage in San Francisco.
I couldn't resist photographing it because phone booths are so rare these days and will soon be nonexistent.
It is hard to remember the period before the ubiquity of cell phones. How did we get in touch with each other? How did we let people know where to meet and what we were doing?
It was because of the ubiquitous telephone booth.
It is worth remembering that a private company maintained these generally clean and safe booths.
As soon as it was no longer relevant as a business these booths became public restrooms. The phone equipment was promptly destroyed by the rambunctious and disrespectful components of our society. In other words it was treated the way all public goods are treated… like public housing. They are abused and neglected.
