The architect of the eastern span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, which goes from San Francisco to Oakland, is a client of mine, Donald McDonald.
Donald has given me the opportunity to write a blog about the golden ratio.
Donald used the golden ratio deliberately in his design of the eastern span of this bridge. The ratio can be seen in the relationship between the structure above the roadway to the supporting structure below it, as well as the ratio to the extensions of the support cables.
Donald also relied on the design of the Saturn 5 rocket in doing his design work.
The bridge and tower are elegant because they use this historically appealing ratio in their design.
Leonardo da Vinci was a fan of the golden ratio and it has been used by artists for many millennia.
The math is quite simple. = 1.6180339887...
We have no idea why this is so appealing to the human eye.
