During the second Iraq War, we lost over 3500 American military lives. We also lost the lives of contractors. These lives were sacrificed on behalf of American national security and Iraqi freedom. The failure to use our sacrifice on behalf of future American security in the Middle East is tantamount to a crime committed by the American president.
A status of forces agreement allows American forces in the country to be tried under the laws of the United States. That includes many other elements but it is essentially a safety precaution for continued American presence in the country. Americans will be in Iraq for many decades and need to be there for our security.
We also need a base for air support in Iraq to protect Kurds and American allied countries nearby.
We need intelligence resources to protect us from Iran.
All of this is endangered by the absence of a status of forces agreement. President Obama committed an act of international crime by failing on this key issue.
