I am not surprised that people love cats so much. I am occasionally surprised when people donate tens of millions of dollars to cat funds. People need pets and cats can be quite anthropomorphic.... warm, cuddly and responsive.
However I think most people should quickly learn that cats are very different from humans.
The media, particularly television is keeping this fact from us.
If a cat or cats happen to be stuck in a room with their deceased owner, they will eat their deceased owner. That is not very anthropomorphic. That is not really the way loving people treat each other.
Fewer cats would inherit millions of dollars if that attribute were more widely known.
I count six television programs that have gone out of their way to overlook this cat-eats-owner phenomenon. There are five forensic mystery programs: two NCIS and three CSI. There is also Bones.
Each of these programs should have had several cases where an owner was eaten by a domestic cat to cover up incriminating evidence. I have never seen such a program. Presumably the Humane Society pressure against such public knowledge is ferocious.
Just to let you know that cats have a limited degree of anthropomorphism that is justified.
