What happened?
In the November 2008 election in California there was a proposition to ban gay marriage. The proposition passed and members of the gay community, in their fury, started punishing people who had made contributions to the proposition. There were many people punished in many ways.
In one instance, a personal friend of mine who is a single, elderly, woman, living alone received several life-threatening harassment calls because of her contribution to the proposition. She was frightened.
California law requires that contributions be accompanied by the name, address and phone number of the donor. That was the source of information for all of the harassing phone calls and other threats.
Judge England Jr. has argued that such harassing behavior does not justify keeping donor information secret. He argues that threatening illegal behavior should be handled by local law enforcement.
So judge England is really saying "fuck yourself".
I no longer contribute to any political campaign, and when asked I always demand that the law requiring my name, address and phone number be changed.
