I am depressed this morning.
The first major effort at stopping the metastasis of the U.S. Federal government has failed.
From my perspective there is only one human force that has taken us out of the feudal world and that is industrial commerce.
There is one force capable of destroying industrial commerce and the modern world: metastasizing government. The force that has never been stopped in human history.

The United States grew large and prosperous because we are surrounded by oceans and our government was very weak for 150 years. We are still essentially a new country, but our government is metastasizing rapidly. Thanks to the 2008 Congress with less popular support than the NAZI Party before the Reichstad fire.
The one other new country is Israel, which is equally rich (if overseas Israeli’s are included in the GNP) But the youth who filled the streets of Tel Aviv a month ago want more government.
The two other fairly new governments are Germany and Japan, with semi-new governments in 1947. Japan killed the golden goose with toxic Keynesian deficits in 1991 and has not grown in the 20 years since. Germany is still alive thanks to its deep hatred of Keynesianism.
If you think government can’t stop commerce, visit Cuba, Tehran or Detroit.
The rise of industrial commerce was fortuitous. We don’t really know how it happened. But as a few of us are coming to understand, the metastasizing cancer of government can kill the modern world.

Our grand children may have pretty much the material we have today but few choices to live creatively.
We have reason to be depressed today.
