I know people who love Thomas Jefferson. All of them are Democrats.
I see what Jefferson has in common with the modern Democratic party.
First he was a notorious spendthrift. When he died he was deeply in debt. He bought anything he saw of interest, and borrowed to pay for it.
Second he said he was opposed to slavery. Yet he was among the only founding fathers who did not free his own slaves. His actions didn't match his words.
Third, he never fought in America or in the Revolutionary Army.
Fourth, he supported the French Revolution long after it was killing people regularly, including Frenchmen who had helped the American revolution.
Fifth, he strongly disliked commerce, abhorred urban centers, and did his best to fight urban and commercial values.
