Earlier
this year I wrote what I consider one of the most coherent, substantive
and powerful blogs of my career (am I being too humble?). The point I
argued so persuasively is that the first and most important human right
is the right to self defense.
Self defense as a right, both personal and social, comes before all other rights including the right to life. It might seem that the right to life is the same as the right to self defense. But it isn’t. The infant and the elderly have the right to life, but if the protectors around them can’t exercise the right to self defense of the infant and elderly, then the right to life is irrelevant.
I
have come a few steps from my earlier blog. I argued that Jews have a
unique lesson to teach the world on this point, as they have taught many
lessons before.
I now think that the State of Israel should actively propagate the value of self defense in the United Nations Charter, in the charter of every international and multi-nation institution including NATO, and commission the study and analysis of the right to self defense in every major language.
Moreover, I believe the U.S. Senate should move to create and pass the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It shall read: ‘The right to self-defense shall be recognized as the fundamental human right for all humans whether they can exercise it themselves or others exercise it on their behave. Such a right to self defense applies to individuals and humans in all voluntary associations.’
This is the lesson we all have to learn.
