In an
earlier blog I mentioned an art gallery and art scene that is being
opened in the Akihabara section of Tokyo.
Here is an interesting twist. A specially designed bus to tour the area around the gallery that is intended to be an arts related district.
Which leads me to think about the effect that Fort Mason had on San Francisco. Fort Mason was conceived and implemented by Ann Howell, an older hippy. Started with more than sixty arts related organizations, located at Fort Mason, it had very low rent. I suspect that Fort Mason contributed to the vitality of San Francisco in the following two decades.
I can't support that thesis but I hope some day there will be a competent method of measuring the contribution of Fort Mason to economic vigor.
I also wish to plea for the proper recognition of important original creators. Ann Howell conceived and created Fort Mason, a brilliant first step in urban use of abandoned Army Bases. The official bureaucratic website doesn't give her credit.
