At the same time as Blacks were moving North their families were falling apart and we had a national single mothers disaster in the works. From the mid-1950s when there were few single Black mothers (under 15% of Black families) to the peak in 1990, single mothers became roughly 60% of Black families. The proportion is much worse when considering only families with children under 10 years of age.
It is time to welcome an interesting new (since the early 1980s) phenomenon in the Black community: the family reunion. You've seen these. They take over a whole hotel with the "Williams Family Reunion". The definition of family is vague, but it is a positive step. It resembles the tribal connections of family in most of Africa.
