Moral codes and coding

On Facebook I regularly get a notice to send a message to Gary or write on his blackboard.  Gary has been dead for 8 months.  It would certainly be rude for a human to make the suggestion to me that Facebook makes.

That evokes the title of this blog: moral codes and coding.  Facebook is a set of computer codes that we use to intervene in our morally grounded relationship world.  The two don't quite jibe.

Facebook will certainly change its coding, in time, to more accurately reflect our moral codes.  In the meantime, those of us who are active users of the Internet can see clearly that we will live long after our hearts stop pumping blood.
