I am sympathetic to the
original military ruling 'don't ask don't tell.' The military needed
time to deal with the issue of red neck soldiers who would have been
uncomfortable with the idea of gays in their barracks and showers.
That original concern is no longer relevant. It is time, it is beyond time, to integrate open gays into the military.
It is simple to do. Announce the date of the change, six to ten months off, then designate the units where the first integration will occur. This will give gays time to get into the appropriate units and let red neck and other anti-gay soldiers transfer to other units.
It is time to do it. No excuses remain.
