I got a report recently that more and more women are signing up for clown classes.
In my mind this is connected to the recent revival of roller derby.
I watched roller derby die here in San Francisco at the roller derby stadium in the late 1960's. At the time it was regularly broadcast on TV and radio and was all girl rough and tumble.
It died and wasn't reborn until amateurs brought it back four or five years ago. Now it is a major sport with hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide. It is still focused on rough and tumble wild girls.
Why were roller derby's fun loving, fearless, cat fighting bawdy girls in hiding for nearly 40 years? Why are they back along with female clowns?
I have only one theory. The women's movement and then the feminist movement created such a phony, prissy, pathetic victim-hood public image of women that these real women (roller derby girls) were shamed into hiding.
Go ahead and blast me. You better have a better explanation that fits the facts.
