In the 19th Century America there were hundreds of experiments with communal living.
The list is endless, these are the ones I know: Amana, Onieda, dozens of Shaker communes, the Rappites, Brook Farm, Ephrata, New Harmony, House of David, Point Loma, Temple Home, Zoarites, Moaravians, Bethel Colony, Aurora, Kaweah, Joyful, Alturia, Winters Island, Koreshan Unity, Kastania (for you who live up in Petaluma) ....
Nearly all of them failed. The few, like the Amish and Mennonites, that survived did so because of strong religious structures, not really communal groups.
After a century of failure with people voluntarily living communally, the obvious solution in the 20th Century was forced communal living with death as the punishment for trying to leave.
That was the great experiment of the 20th Century. All the government enforced communal projects of the 20th Century had iron curtains around them, or deserts or oceans: the USSR, China, Cuba, North Vietnam and North Korea. They all failed too.
Can most people draw a simple conclusion from two centuries of failure? Most people can't.
