I think about pacifism in the context of the newest most interesting store to open in San Francisco in a decade. Opened in San Francisco's Japantown, New People, is four floors of condensed Tokyo style.
What concerns me is that Japan has become the first truly pacifist nation in history (I always exclude the Shaka Kingdom in India because the King let his people be killed, we don't know how the people felt.) The Japanese are 96% pure unadulterated pacifists and they are oblivious to the nuclear armed murderous neighbors in North Korea.
The style in Tokyo and in the New People store is predominantly child-like, think interesting variations on Hello Kitty. Are the Japanese wrapping themselves in a childlike world of oblivion?
I am always reluctant to connect popular culture to reality, but I have trouble ignoring this connection.
