Several decades ago I had a client in Japan who was a stunning success in clothing design but when he split from his business partner (lover) he was left with no skills to manage his large company. I tried to send him to an American MBA school course and found they were totally useless in teaching management.
Studying for years about the subject of teaching management, before and after that event, and teaching a course in management myself, I must pass along my hard won finding: management can only be learned on the job. Management is an apprentice skill. If you had a good boss in a well managed environment you can become a good manager. If not then not.
What is the relevance of this material to my readers?
We have a new president who has never had any managerial experience. My long history in this field tells me that he can't learn on the job. Much as I refuse to offend my loyal readers, I have low expectations of the current president. I read conservative blogs that are rather mean spirited about the new president but so far no one is calling him the affirmative action president. I personally have low expectations and would love to be proved wrong. Unfortunately I continue to see the evidence that management can only be learned as an apprentice, not as the boss.
