I would like to assert that the American accent that most Americans feel most comfortable with is the Texas twang. The kind we used to hear from airline pilots.
How do I know? Three times I've encountered evidence.
I knew a young Swede, 18 years old, whom I introduced to many other Americans. After meeting him they all said how well he spoke and understood English. It wasn't particularly true, he had polished his accent with a year in Austin Texas.
One year I was taking American Congressmen to meet top Japanese bureaucrats. The man every member of Congress liked most was the head of a department. This man had gone to grad school at the U. of Texas (he also had a beautiful blonde secretary).
The most popular tour guide at a graduate business school in Lyon France, for American visitors, was a French woman who had a Texas accent she developed from living with a family in Houston.
Put that in your file. If you know someone learning English have them study with a Texan.
