I
just remembered an old joke from the late 1950s. A man delivering
manure arrives at an estate and knocks on the door. A butler answers.
The delivery man announces himself 'I'm Mr Rabbit with a delivery for
Mr. Turtle'.
The butler responds arrogantly with an English accent: 'He is not
available. Mr Tur-tle, is down by the well'.
Response: 'Please tell him Mr Rab-bit is here with s-hit'.
What strikes me about this joke is that it is based on a frustration with 'class'. The joke must have disappeared with the disappearance of the hereditary upper class in America in 1960.
