I may be wrong, but I don't see management in the world of business acceding to the reality of global 24-7 commerce.
I
know that management on a Navy aircraft carrier operates with 24-7
built into its design. When the commander of a carrier leaves his
control post, the full 100% decision making power immediately shifts to the
second in command. That is true for all positions.
Moreover,
up and down the ranks, everyone on the carrier is empowered to stop the
take-offs and landings on the deck if the individual sees a danger.
Both elements, hand-offs and low level emergency powers, are vital to
24-7 operations.
The devolution of power to
every person including the lowest person on the hierarchy is part of
24-7 management because some decisions, major decisions, must be made
so quickly that they can not move up the chain of command.
I
don't see either of these practices or the associated management
structures in place in any of the commercial enterprises I deal with.
When will we have it?
