The humorous rumor going around is that American Media which owns the National Enquirer is preparing a bid to buy the New York Times.
The reasoning is that the content of the two newspapers is very similar; false celebrity stories, insider leaks that are often unfounded, news stories that bear no connection to reality and advertising for content material that is created specifically for the advertiser.
The readers of both the National Enquirer and the New York Times know that they are being fed unreliable gossip....just that the New York Times readers have a higher average income and higher levels of education. The two newspapers make a good fit and could easily overlap their newsrooms.
The New York Times is definitely for sale because big debts come due in two years that can't be refinanced.
