The more I mull over the issue of the modern commercial world being so expansive, so exciting, so rewarding, so challenging and offering so many enjoyable ways of living.....the more I wonder if there is any future for politics and the world of politicians.
The question keeps coming to my mind: "Why would any competent, interesting and curious person choose the world of politics over the world of commerce?"
In San Francisco the answer is clear. The political world is filled with inadequate, sub-competent people. I was active in politics for nearly eight years and I rarely met an interesting, competent or intelligent person. I've kept a finger in politics for another thirty years and have never been disabused of my earlier experience. I've known, well, dozens of political leaders. I can name the two or three exceptions to the 'boob' rule. Those exceptions left politics very quickly for the real world of commerce.
My guess is that politics will be seen more and more as theater, while the few valuable legislative-power brokering functions politics plays will continue to be carried out by the few competent people in the background.
