In the late 1970s, when I was a portfolio manager, I sent one of my favorite investment advisers to South Africa to evaluate the investment opportunities. He returned with a positive investment review for the short term but predicted that apartheid would not last more than fifteen years. He was exactly right.
Now I regularly meet well educated competent former South Africans who have left the country with no plans to return.
I asked one of my brothers to report on his recent trip to South Africa. His report is that the government is totally incompetent. With few possible positive changes, the direction for the country is clearly negative.
South Africa seems to be a slow motion train wreck. How many years before the world can see that the future of this beautiful bountiful country has disappeared?
