San Francisco is hard to understand.
The city government for twenty years has been on an endless treadmill to introduce Marxist ideas of central planning and nanny government. Every large corporation has been driven out of town, and so have new bio-technologies. Every potential new business leaves the city as soon as it grows large enough.
One friend called my attention to the
history of San Francisco since Phil Burton and Willie Brown, in the
mid-1960s, created a Democratic Party machine. From that time forward,
as the party machine has gained total control over the city, city
government has become more concerned with maintaining political power
than with civic well being.
That is exactly what we have: politicians totally beholden to the Democratic Party machine who have no regard for civic needs or concerns. How else to explain the horrible decline in public transportation over these three decades, relieved only by three years of temporary improvement when the citizens rose up and tried to throw the whole government out of office.
