Rather baffling but maybe one of my blog readers knows the
answer. On the right is a photo of a
section of the fancy new newspaper racks the City has installed to overcome the
blight of private newspaper racks. Free
speech laws prevent reasonable limits on newsstand boxes (as I learned once when
I tried to control the number in front of a business I ran).
Strange thing about these boxes, there are nearly forty at
Castro and Market, but not a single one has the San Francisco Examiner in it. The Examiner is left out, though it has a
daily circulation of over 180,000 here. Many
freebies are included with circulations under 10,000 as is the Chronicle, which
last reports puts at 50,000 week-day circulation.
On the left is my favorite new coffee shop on Valencia near 21st, Ritual. They roast their own beans all day long, have tables and plugs for laptops, free wifi and the place is very clean. It is usually full, and appeals to the bicyclists, cyclists and whole artsy nerdy neighborhood.
