Craig’s list has changed the rental market in San Francisco.
Before Craig’s list became the market for rental apartments, the usual list of neighborhoods in newspapers and rental agencies ranged from nine to thirteen. There never were such neighborhoods as the simplistic short list identified.
Craig’s list has 34 neighborhoods to choose from. Craig’s 34 neighborhoods are much closer to social reality. The consequence is that people know the neighborhoods they want to live in. With Craig’s list they don’t waste their time looking in the wrong places.
Consequence: some of the newly defined tiny neighborhoods are able to get a premium on rent because there are few other listings in that area and landlords have figured that out thanks to Craig‘s list.
