I notice that my friends who had served in Jerry Brown's administration began to distance themselves from Jerry when he decided to run for mayor of Oakland. They have kept increasing the distance after his eight years as mayor and as he plans to run for a Statewide office again.
The same is true of my friends who were in the Carter administration. Today, they won't return his phone calls.
Jerry was quirky but.....
Jerry was quirky but used his power interestingly. Out of office he was quirky with no managerial skills. Jimmy Carter was a terrible manager and had the charisma of a colorful cockroach. Jimmy, out of power was guided by a moral compass that always pointed in the direction he was going anyway. Ipso, he became good friends with Michael Moore, a man with the morals of a rabid pitbull and the intellect of a mad hatter.
Moore is one of the few people who continue to associate with Jimmy.
Looks like Billy Clinton is in the same boat. I know few people in his administration, but he was a terrible manager with a moral compass that always points to his belly (me, me, me). His global conference in New York was a fiasco and embarrassed everyone who recognized that it was a self-centered morass.
Now Billy has gone to Israel and gave a talk telling Israelis, once again, that he was right about Oslo; Now, after Adolph Arafat is dead for a year, Clinton admits that Arafat rejected Oslo and started the intifada. But Clinton still wants Israelis to help the Palestinians get it together. No applause in the audience hearing that message. Clinton is telling people who's children were killed (with his help) playing in the street that cars are all of a sudden safe and Israelis should send their remaining kids back to play in the street.
Distance. Now more people will know to keep their distance from Billy too.
