The State Department has announced that the U.S. is trying to set up a direct open line of communication with China. Apparently the U.S. has been trying to do this for some time and China is now showing an interest.
A central point of contact on both ends could mean a more effective and coherent set of mutual policies.
This is good news. China is the strangest player on the international stage. Two thousand years of experience in foreign affairs, fifteen years experience with global commerce and no experience with democracy. Moreover, China is the first society to try and participate in global commerce with a government based on a communist single party.
