Tokyo
The current brouhaha between China and
Japan is about the PM's annual visit to Yasukuni Shrine where Class A
war criminals are buried along with others who died fighting for
Japan.
China claims that Japan signed a secret agreement in 1986 to move the Class A war criminals to another burial ground. Japan (and my knowledgeable friends) claim that no such agreement ever existed.
The Japanese “official” explanation (every Japanese says it) for the current incendiary climate is the weakness of the Chinese Communist party and the need to create external enemies (including Taiwan.)
The photo on the left is a group of young Japanese practicing their singing in a park with a memorial stone behind them. The stone commemorates Sugamo prison, on the same site, where war criminals were hanged.
