Tokyo
It's 3 am. I arrived in Tokyo yesterday. Sunrise is 4:30 am because the Japanese don't use daylight savings time. There is no evidence that daylight savings time saves energy or the Japanese, who use one-third the energy per capita of Americans, would use it.
Most interesting two articles I read on the plane were in the latest Commentary. One article by David Pryce-Jones traces the foreign policy of France toward Jews over two hundred years and toward Israel for one hundred years. Pryce-Jones, looking at original Quai d’Orsay documents, finds an unrelenting two hundred years of anti-Semitism and treachery.
The other, a review, by Daniel Johnson of Laurel Leff's Buried by the Times: The Holocaust... discusses the outrageous culpability of the NYTimes in deliberately hiding the Holocaust while it was happening.
Of course this should be no surprise to readers of this blog. The NYTimes only recently apologized for eulogizing Stalin at the peak of his murderous rage and accompanying show trials. The current NYTimes has covered Saddam Hussein and Adolph Arafat with the same degree of aplomb they previously used for Stalin and Hitler. The NYTimes these days gives George Bush more hostile coverage than they give Robert Mugabe.
