My friends and I have made great progress in our dealings with Lefty Fundamentalism. Recognizing it as a religion means it deserves our respect as much as Mormonism or Scientology does. It is particularly good to think of Lefty Fundamentalism as a religion because sensible people don’t bring up religion in convivial gatherings and sensible people easily resist the proselytizing efforts of a religious person.
The problem is that we can’t publicly refer to Lefty Fundamentalism as a religion because the appellation religion is odious to Lefties. Lefties consider themselves secular, non-religious. This is the same problem Buddhists, Daoists, Shintoists, Orthodox Jews and many others have.
The term religion only applies accurately to Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Bahai, Islam and a few other theistic teachings.
Trouble is, I can’t find another term. The truth is that Lefty Fundamentalism is a denomination of monotheism and should just be called a denomination. This was pointed out half a century ago by Raymond Aron. Still, Lefty Fundamentalists have trouble understanding their roots in monotheism. Lefty Fundamentalism has clear distinctions between good and evil; in communism it was the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Now good and evil are underdogs (Palestinians, women, lesbians, nature etc.) and big corporations (Wal Mart, Starbucks, McDonalds, Halliburton, etc.) The call to faith, god, the-here-after is a belief in a utopian future on earth.
Can’t we find a term for secular and non-theistic religion?
