I'm certainly no foreign policy wonk, although I have been involved on the extreme periphery. I see a dramatic change in our (U.S.) China policy.
In one day we announced that we favor a new global embargo on North Korea, a client state of China's. We announced that the Chinese balance of trade surplus is now a problem for the U.S. We told the EU that the recent Chinese legislation authorizing war against Taiwan was proof that China should not be allowed to buy arms.
My guess is the policy changed from: encourage Chinese economic growth and keep warning China of the need to be part of the global community. Our policy now is: China is big enough to be treated as an adult. Adult medicine and candor are needed in dealing with China along with clear American action. No more paternalism.
