I want to call the attention of historians to the Ward
Churchill story. Churchill blamed
America for the 9-11-2001 attacks, the first direct attack on the mainland
since 1812. Churchill was banned from Hamilton College and is having his tenure
threatened at U. of Colorado – Boulder. This is 2005, 3.5 years later. Hamilton College and U.C.-Boulder are as Lefty as San Francisco.
A few days after the 9-11 attack I kicked an anti-Semitic Egyptian-American* out of my coffee group for circulating and defending an email saying the same thing as Ward Churchill. I was roundly attacked for my stance by nearly a dozen San Franciscans. Times may have changed.
The most popular commercial on the SuperBowl 39 show was a patriotic piece by Budweiser; soldiers being cheered at an airport.
I see this month as an inflexion point where Americans no longer tolerate blatant anti-Americanism.
My observation comports with David Gelernter's view that a war against terrorism will generate American patriotism because the enemy is against the whole conception of America.
