I read a Jared Diamond commentary on Michael Crichton’s new
book State of Fear. I’ve read half a
dozen reviews of the book so I know it is based on Crichton’s lecture three
years ago at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club about the false hysteria around
global warming.
Crichton is an
excellent writer and a good scientific mind but not good enough for me to buy his new book. On the other
hand I hold Jared Diamond in complete contempt as I
explained after reading his Guns, Germs and Steel book last Spring. When I read the Diamond diatribe in a recent Salon issue, in which
Diamond acts like a five-year old and says he (Diamond) must be more
authoritative because he has sold more copies of a single book than Crichton …
I had to run out and buy the Crichton book.
