I choose the day I have the fewest readers to let you know about the biggest outrage of the past several decades.
Since 1960, the number and magnitude of fires, residential and commercial, in the United States has dropped more than half, while the population has grown by nearly one-quarter.
The main reasons for the decline in fires are better fire retardant material on mattresses, decline in smoking, better fire-suppressant building codes and better fire alarm systems.
The outrage is that the number of fire-people has steadily increased during this time and the so has the number of fire stations.
In San Francisco, where the population has been the same over forty years, fires have decline more than 60%, the number of fire-people has grown and the number of stations is the same. Ambulances operate out of fire stations to make them seem busy. Big fire engines with resuscitators are sent to every 911 heart attack.
It is up to you to figure out why this story hasn’t gotten out.
