We’ve been following a building in the first block of Oak, near Van Ness. The first photo was of a hole in the side of the building to remove the heating tanks for the basement level swimming pool. My interest in the pool comes from the early 1960s when I swam in the pool, which was filled from an underground stream that originates near my home on Twin Peaks.
The health department forced the pool operators to use chlorine and regular city water, instead of the free flowing stream, which ended the charm of the pool for me.
Now the building is being replaced and the Greek columned façade has to be retained for historic preservation reasons. The photo shows the five story steel girder construction that is required to hold the façade while the remainder of the building is replaced. (You can click on the photo).
