In case you didn’t know, Groundhog Day is a movie. What is interesting is that in three instances of national TV and journalism, I heard or read references to the movie Groundhog Day --- in the past week.
I believe that Groundhog Day has become a metaphor in the United States. It means: condemned to do the same thing over again until you get it right.
The movie is about: A Pittsburgh weatherman (Bill Murray) who goes to a small town in Pennsylvania to witness the appearance of Punxsutawney Phil, the famed groundhog who can predict the weather. But things get a little unusual when the weatherman wakes up and Groundhog Day repeats itself all over again!
Murray tries everything a human can try, murder, suicidal driving, a variety of crimes, knowing he will wake up the next day to start fresh.
Murray finally decides to be kind, generous and helpful to everyone around him ---- and the spell is broken. The movie and the metaphor suggest that life is worthwhile when we behave the way Murray finally behaves. That’s OK with me.
