My man in the White House held a press conference at his Texas ranch, six months after he was inaugurated, to announce his moral opposition to human genetic engineering. He announced the appointment of a BioEthics committee to examine the issue --- to be led by Leon Kass.
Ed Rothstein reports in the 3/13 NYTimes on the Kass committee release of a set of humanities readings which are free for the asking. The readings are Literature that deals with what it means to be human.
Being human is what the debate on human genetic engineering is about.
I've been in this field for more than six years. The first group I met who had no clue, were the professors of bioethics. What a bunch of losers. They have focused on experimentation and death issues in hospitals. They now have a PC schedule of right and wrong. They have zero ability to examine the issue of what being human is about. Two of the old-standard moldy bioethicist quit when Kass released his readings.
I'm very proud of this administration. We have University of Chicago thinking informing the debate on what it means to be human in confronting the greatest scientific question of our generation.
We also have University of Chicago thinking on the other great issue of our time: the responsibilities of a Great Nation in dealing with the tyrants on the planet.
