My coauthor, Salli Rasberry, asked me that question. She knew I had a unique opinion based on working with over 2,000 businesses over 45 years.
There are several types of people who appear to be business people but aren't.
The one that I first understood was not a business person is a farmer. Try being a business consultant when hired by a farmer. If your partner is god (weather) your activities are too risky for a business person to choose this line of work. Some farmers operate on a large scale with irrigation. That changes little, because the market price for your product in the end is determined by the way the weather effects the global production of the crops you grow. A farmer is a hard working gambler.
The second person who is widely seen as a business person is a Real Estate Agent. But they aren’t. They are employees, sales people, working for a broker. The broker is a business person. The broker has to maintain a steady supply of new customers, a general reputation and a record of paying his salespeople on time and accurately. Sales people are sales people.
The third person who is mistakenly considered a business person is a ‘developer’. A developer works on separate projects. Each project is a gamble on its own. Though borrowing for a project can be secured by assets from a previous project. Making a living on a project by project basis is not how a business person operates. It is gambling.
In the early 1980’s a young man in San Francisco opened a school for entrepreneurs. He was much loved by his friends who were mostly fellow trust-fund babies. His class taught how to create and run a ‘project’. His school went under when one of his ‘projects’ was wiped out along with all his money.
President Trump was a 'developer' not a businessman.
However, having been a developer has given President Trump a unique set of skills. Developers are almost universally hated by politicians, NIMBYs, social activists, the press and nearly everyone else. That has given President Trump a powerful and necessary set of skills to survive the onslaught of hatred that he has endured since the day he entered politics. He is among the toughest people in our society.
President Donald Trump has not been a success story for a 'businessman in the White House'. His is the historically unique story of a developer being one of the most talented and appropriate people to ever lead an nation. In a time of near social collapse.
