As the business manager of a mixed white and black Methodist congregation I had to deal with the Sunday collection plate. I always designated two people to count the money. I just looked at the total revenue from each of the two services (called ‘Celebrations’).
So I did an experiment. I had the ushers reach over to each congregant to get the donation and had them go to the middle of the pew when people were standing up. Hard to do, but we did it once.
The collection plate revenue increased nearly 200%.
So I had special collection bags designed (still red velvet) and made. A person could not reach into the collection bag to TAKE OUT MONEY.
These collection bags may have been used in other churches before. Now I see them in nearly every urban church I visit.
The Google images and Amazon only have short offering bags, one foot deep. Mine were two feet deep. Mixed churches must have to make their own.
