I have trouble remembering anything before age three. I am especially dubious about others claims to remember further back. Of course the existence of photos, videos and films makes earlier memories possible, but I doubt the personal recovered nature of those memories.
There is a reason I think this age is particularly relevant and important. I don’t think we can have memories before there is structure in our mind. I have no idea what structure in this case is, but I know it represents some organization of images, experiences and language that allows specific memories to to be filed and retrieved.
I only know this from watching infants learn. I see infants cogitating the world around them long before they can interact or interpret it. I see that period as the formation period of the mind in which categories and classes are being created and sorted.
Because our mothers are generally central to our learning language, I also see our mothers as helping shape our mental structures.
I was raised by several Mexican nannies, one a young beauty. I wonder what impact that had on my mental structure.
When I was in college I found her. She had left my family when my father was in the Navy in Virginia and got married at age 16. She was living in Richmond with a prosperous husband and two children. She was still beautiful and very sexy.
