Everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet. The Montague and Capulet families were feuding and their offspring fell in love.
When my granddaughters were studying this play I had to point out to them how stupid and irrelevant it is to today’s audiences. We don’t have any two prominent families feuding. The Whitney’s don’t hate the Roosevelts so much that children in either family would be forbidden to marry each other.
That sort of thing might still happen in rural France, Southern Italy, Spain, parts of Latin America, most of Arabia, India or Bulgaria.
What has changed in the 430 years since the Shakespearean play was first performed ?
Modern commerce has intervened. The Montague and Capulet offspring have to work together at Fiat headquarters. Modern commerce has eliminated family feuds because commerce is what delivers food, clothing and shelter to individuals, not families.
Most of the world still doesn’t understand that deep positive value of modern commerce. It is rarely understood among the Luddites on the Left in most modern economies who value victimology. Modern commerce values meritocracy, individual uniqueness and diversity; not family supremacy.
Modern Lefties are trying to replace family feuding with gender and race warfare. That is what a modern play should be about, if anyone could take it seriously.
