They must be of incomparable pain for the part of our population that is tall, big and fat. When I have an open seat next to me I always pray that it will be filled by a young Japanese woman.
This state of affairs is unnecessary and intolerable.
We know the proportion of people who will not fit into coach seats. We also know that this population has no more money than the rest of the population.
It is therefore incumbent upon airlines to provide a small percentage of seats that accommodate oversized people and make these seats available by raffle for each flight.
I am quite confident that if the airlines do not do this voluntarily by themselves there will be legislation to make it happen. The legislation will be awkward, incompetent and ineffective.
Unfortunately, the airlines do not seem to be publicly examining this issue.
The new Boeing airplanes have 3 x 3 seating which makes exactly no sense.
