The other day I heard a loud rap song coming from a car 50 feet away. Several of my friends commented on the offensive behavior of the car and driver.
So what is this about?
I can go back to my experience in the 1960s and early 1970's.
For nearly a decade, young black males and a few whites and Latino males walked around the street with boom boxes, large plastic devices to play radio music and tapes. Usually at 90 decibels. It seemed rude and mannerless.
Along came a miracle. The Sony tape player, about the size of a box of English cigarettes. Within less than a year noisy boom boxes disappeared and little earbuds appeared on the black males.
I would conclude from this 1970's transition that the boom boxes and the hundred dollar Sony players were simply a display of cool.
That is probably what is happening, now, with loud cars blaring music.
