The fact is, stem cell research is very helpful to the scientific community. stem cells do not die because they do not have programed cell death like the cells in our body do. also they are very much like tumor cells that proliferate at a great speed but do not have programed cell death. i am convinced that it is both nature and nurture that create a homosexual individual but why has no one ever pondered the fact that nurture could set off a genetic marker that creates the "gay gene"? i.e. both nurture and nature are working synergisticly. Democrats funding stem cell research would help scientific breakthroughs and increase our understanding not only about sexual orientation but on other diseases and other medical anomalies such as tumors and auto immune diseases.

if you are truly interested and looking for truth look up HeLa cells... they are cells from a woman named Henrietta Lacks, scientists still are using them today, although Henrietta has passed away, perhaps her DNA will someday save the lives of others with cancer.

There won't be any discovery of a "gay gene" anytime soon. The current research suggests that homosexuality is only partially genetic, if it is genetic at all. That means they might be able to figure probability for homosexuality based on composition of many interacting genes, but that would require more knowledge of genes first. Just like neurologists, geneticists don't know how or why or even when anything works, just the region of where something works. So, the likelihood is that any gay-extermination attempts would affect heterosexuals and homosexuals alike. Which means this doesn't concern gays anymore than any slippery slope argument.

Dr. Nick Campos

Stem cell research is here to stay, so discussing whether it should continue is about as relevant as discussing the psychology of cosmetic surgery. What is important now is our responsibility with the science. I think in this light, the title of this post makes perfect sense.

mradd

You know, if you're trying to make an allusion to the holocaust you could just say "a gay voting for a democrats is like a gay voting for the Nazis" given that Gays we were in the concentration camps right along with the Jews, but I don't suppose you care, Just as you really don't care about stemcell research... it's just an opportunity to argue with "tha luburuls"...

M. Phillips

Stopping federal funding for research in a specific area has a long effective history.

Think of supersonic commercial planes. Think of iron filings in the Pacific Ocean to create more oxygen producing plankton. Think of all the power generating satellites in orbit. All research that was stopped at the federal funding level and research stopped.

As I said in the blog, the issue is not stem cells per se, there are plenty of sources, it is the proto-human issue that is the core of the stem cell debate.

Rob

"The term "stem cell research" is a synonym for human genetic engineering."

You will not find this sentence or anything like it in any peer-reviewed literature on the subject of stem cell research. So unless you can provide this literature, then you have clearly stated something that is not a verifiable fact.

From Poster: "But, wait! stem cell research is the real deal; it's the answer to all our health woes. Yeah, right. If anyone thinks that this technology is not going to be used for human "improvement", then that person is living a delusion."

So you're suggesting that because of one possible (not really possible) way that this research can be used is 'bad', that the research should not go forward even though it has a possibility of making medical progress? Since you seem to be a conservative, let me pose this question. Should we stop using and developing nuclear power because the uranium that is needed for power can also be made into dirty atomic bombs that Muslim terrorists can detonate in the US? Should we immediately stop our output of carbon into the atmosphere and completely screw our economy in the process because, hey, this global warming thing may actually be happening? Should we immediately withdraw our troops from Iraq because we just might be creating more animosity towards us and creating a breeding ground for terrorism?

To go along with your logic on stem cell research, we need to do all three of these things above. And that is decidedly un-conservative.

Neither party is perfect, but the Democratic party tends to care for the rights of the individual, while the Republican party aims to preserve the rights of the society. So yes the Democratic party is more favorable towards gay rights. But that doesn't mean all Republicans are evil and it doesn't mean Democrats are Nazis. That comment was just posted to get a rise out of people.
But for the whole genetic argument. There is no gay gene thats illogical. Republicans hate stem cell research because they think its immoral not to combat some democratic conspiracy. And finally their was a supreme court case on this issue, its illegal to tamper with the human body in that way.

Jim Lambeth

> The term "stem cell research" is a synonym for human genetic engineering.

This is where your logic sailed down the toilet.

Gays voting for Democrats is like Jews voting for Nazis? That's not simply wrong, it's just plain stupid.

I have never been so infuriated by such backwards logic. Did you ever think that voting for a Democrat that supports gay rights might help this country accept homosexuality as no different than race? So that if there is a gay gene, it wouldn't be touched in a genetic selection world, just as the genes that make us black and asian and white wouldn't be touched.

As a gay, a jew and a democrat, you make me sick. How dare you compare something as simple as voting for a dem to voting for the most ruthless leader in world history. Fuck You.

Dr. Nick Campos

Hallelujah, Sir. Your words ring so true.

The propagandists push stem cell research as possible cures for cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and so forth. How many billions of dollars have already been pumped into research looking for cures for every one of these diseases? Trillions more like it.

But, wait! stem cell research is the real deal; it's the answer to all our health woes. Yeah, right. If anyone thinks that this technology is not going to be used for human "improvement", then that person is living a delusion.

We have a tendency to see things from a one-sided perspective: republicans, bad; democrats, good. Sorry, it's not really that way--that's simply an illusion. There are two sides to everything, including stem cell research.

I'm sure many good things can and will come from stem cell research; but don't for a minute think that genetic tampering won't be used to breed out certain "undesirable" traits. And that will probably have supporters (and opponents) from both sides.

DC in Seattle

This is the most ludicrous thing I have heard in two presidential terms. Only a Republican would come out with such a spun story on gays and democrats.

Everyone with more than one synaptic firing on any given day knows that Republicans - not Democrats - are the ones trying to rid the planet of Gay, Lesbian, Transgendered and other people "of color" and who are literally snuggling the Pope's anus to garnish the Vatican's support for total Republican rule.

Anyone who is Gay and Republican is obviously confused, and the person who came up with this comment that voting Democrat is like Jews voting for Nazi's is either evil and corrupt like the Bush Dynasty and all their cronies, or a blithering idiot who needs serious counseling.

Zack

You probably should just keep your mouth shut you REPUBLICAN!!! there is nothing wrong w/ being gay or a DEMOCRAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

M. Phillips

Here is James Watson telling what he wants to do to fetuses when the gay gene is found:

Your vision of where this research can lead is disturbing. Especially disturbing is the fact that I can easily see the logic in your prediction and that it is a very likely scenario to play out. Pity the poor children that will take part in this future study in madness.

Like you I have a hard time believing sexual orientation is genetic. But who knows, it may be. Personally, I think it would be very interesting if they did find a gay gene. The really interesting result might be the testing for this gene in the gay community. It may lead to a discussion on who is genetically gay and who is merely culturally gay. I would interested to know if the gay community would differentiate between the authentic, genetically gay person and those that were merely recruited into the community.

Thanks for posting the interesting stuff!

M. Phillips

I personally don't believe attraction to one's own sex is genetic. The global evidence that I know of suggests the opposite.

That absence of a genetic connection, I'm equally sure, will not stop scientists from finding such an imaginary gene and promoting its efficacy which will take more than a generation to test.

That testing process, being done on some thousands sorry offspring, will mean decades of certainty that homosexuality can be genetically engineered. Along with the certainty will come awesome forces of additional engineering to buttress the erroneous idea.

Based on the staying power of the many global warming and cooling hysterias, I expect the gay gene hysteria to last decades longer.

Franko

The tone of your post suggests you think this gene will be discovered. Wouldn't it be more interesting if the researchers found no genetic link?

M. Phillips

First, let's recognize the reality of politics. Neither party has everything everyone wants.

Second, anyone who thinks the Democratic Party supports gay marriage is smoking too much pot.

Third, calling the difference between civil union and marriage a matter of ridicule and humiliation is pushing an argument too far. Comparing the issue of "ridicule and humiliation" to the Nazi-like goal is eliminating gays is wrong.

Ray Evans

And a gay voting for a Republican is better, because choosing guaranteed humiliation and ridicule is better than an outside chance of extinction? Am I getting this right?
