I’m becoming more and more convinced that the current low level Shia-Sunni war in Iraq is to the benefit of the rest of the world as is the Taliban-Afghan war. If Arabs and Islamists are fighting each other, which they may be able to do for several centuries into the future, shouldn’t we be glad that they are not fighting us directly?
Columbia has had a low level domestic war for over fifty years (Not Columbia University). Low level wars are desirable if they keep the combatants away from the rest of the world. Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan are magnets to keep dangerous people away from us.
Yes, we will lose troops and so will NATO. Yes, we will have to learn to live with it. As I pointed out earlier, three times more black males 17-25 die in Oakland, per capita, than their black Army peers in Baghdad. In absolute numbers more young black men are killed in Washington D.C. than in Iraq. Congress, including the Black Caucus, seem only to complain about Iraq.
